The IRAQ War, 2003 To
Since the Persian Gulf War in 1991 the U. S. and Britain had been keeping a tight rein on Saddam Hussein, waging an undeclared conflict against Iraq for 12 years with sanctions and ordered air strikes in the “Iraqi no-fly zones”.
In 2001, within two weeks after the September 11 attacks, President Bush ordered that plans for an invasion be drawn up. .
According to President George W. Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair, the reasons for the invasion were “to disarm Iraq of weapons of mass destruction, to end Saddam Hussein’s alleged support of terrorism, and to free the Iraqi people.”
Traditional U. S. allies, including France, Germany, New Zealand and Canada strongly opposed the invasion, arguing that there was no evidence of weapons of mass destruction
On October 7, 2004, a CIA report concludes Saddam Hussein did not have weapons of mass destruction.
On March 19, 2003, a combined forces of troops from the U. S., Britain, Australia and Poland invaded Iraq and toppled the regime of Saddam Hussein in 21 days of major combat operations, ending as Baghdad falls to U. S. troops on April 9, 2003.
On May 1, 2003, President Bush declared an end to the Iraq war. The war continued with terror attacks and suicide bombers from al-Qaeda and civil war between religious sects. All with U. S. troops caught in the middle, in some cases, being attacked by all parties.
December 13, 2003 Saddam Hussein hiding in a underground pit is captured by U. S. forces. He was tried and executed on December 30, 2006.
American casualties up to February 2010 were 3,486 combat deaths, 918 non-combat deaths and 31,839 wounded and 2 missing.
And as I close this segment, on July 31,2011. The U.S. Special Inspector General said Iraq is more dangerous than a year ago with 15 soldiers killed in June 2011, the bloodiest month In 2 years, nearly all killed in attacks by Shiite militias bent on forcing U. S. troops out in accordance with a year-end deadline.
How long are U.S. troops going to die keeping these tribes from killing each other. It’s been more than 8 years.
